How to install LCD TV mount? chapter 4

Getting Started

Plan for 2-3 hours to complete this job if you’ve never done it before. Likely, you’ll be done in a little over an hour though - you just should budget enough time so that if you run into problems you’ll be ok and you don’t want to rush mounting your precious new flat-panel TV.

Open the mount and lay out all the contents in a place that’s out of the way. Your mount probably included some instructions about how to proceed from here. If they’re clear enough, feel free to follow them. However, don’t get your hopes up on those.

Selecting a Wall Mount for Your TV

You must either already have your TV or know the model that you’re going to buy. It’s very likely that the retailer you purchased (or will purchase) your TV from carries wall mounts. These are high profit items for the big box stores. Best Buy, for instance, carries a variety of wall mounts for flat panel plasma and LCD TVs, but they charge $200-$400 for them. Don’t get suckered for these prices. The wall mounts that these big box retailers sell are the same quality that you pay a fraction of the price at less expensive online retailers.

Got that new flat panel TV? Looking for one? Where are you going to put it?

If you’re like me and thousands of others, you know it would look good up on your wall. When I bought my flat panel plasma TV, I wanted the same thing. In this guide, I’m going to show you how easily I mounted a Samsung 42″ plasma TV on the wall of my living room in just a few hours on a Saturday morning. This step-by-step guide will teach you how to do the same.

First, let’s take a look at the before and after of what I’m talking about.

Before

This is what my wall looked like in my tiny living room prior the installation of the flat panel TV. To the left a tree hides the unsightly side of the TV from the view of those walking in the front door.

After: Flat Panel on Wall

This is the same wall after my project was completed. Look ma, no wires.

It’s all the in-between steps that make this happen! Read on for how to do it right.

Commercial Applications

The most common commercial applications involve a ceiling mount that can be lowered into the proper viewing height with extension columns. Buying a ceiling mount takes some thought based on the space, the drop of the mount, and a joist to connect to. We offer a variety of mounting accessories that allow for specific applications. Many restaurants and bars use plasma screens because of the wide viewing angle and brightness. In this case, a mixture of ceiling, corner, wall, and articulating mounts may need to be used. We have several years experience and we can recommend the best mounts to use for your situation. For commercial applications we recommend calling 1-888-764-9273. For large purchases, we provide discounts on commercial jobs.

Smaller Rooms, The Kitchen, The Exercise Room, A Den

  1. The Kitchen

The kitchen is most likely for screen sizes smaller than 20 inches. The most common mount for kitchen applications is a mount that attaches to the bottom of a cabinet. An under the cabinet mount is a great space saver, because it allows for you to flip the TV up and out of the way when it is not in use.

Family Room, Bedroom, or Basement

Most Plasma or LCD TVs are mounted in a family room for recreational viewing. In this case screen sizes are normally 37" or above. Where do you want to mount the LCD TV?

1. Above the Fireplace
Mounting the TV above a fireplace is a good option for utilizing space in your family room. However, we would only recommend this option if you are able to sit at least 10 feet away from the TV. You should consider buying a "tilt mount", this enables you to adjust/tilt the TV to the best viewing angle.

  2. In a Corner
In today's homes many family rooms are filled with windows and have limited wall space. In this case, we recommend mounting the TV in a corner of the room and use a swing arm mount to adjust the viewing angle. You can then mount the TV at a custom viewing height and swivel the TV to the best viewing position.

Universal Mounts vs. Custom Mounts

HTmarket.com recommends you buy a custom mount, if a model is available, for your Plasma or LCD. Why a custom mount? It's guaranteed to fit the TV whereas universal mounts only fit 90% of the time. The custom option also makes the side and back of the TV less cluttered than a universal mount.

Consider the Studs

Plasma and LCD screens are heavy you need to make sure you have wall studs or a ceiling joist if you plan to hang the TV from the ceiling. If you have normal (16" spacing) wood studs most mounts will work properly. If however, you have 24" spacing you will need to look at mounts that have a lateral shift adjustment. Hardware kits are available or included for installations involving wood studs, metal, cinder blocks, and solid concrete

LCD TV Mount Guide 01

Did you just buy a new Plasma, Flat Panel, or LCD TV? Are you wondering how to hang the TV correctly? Where should I place the TV? Do you mount it to a wall or above the fireplace? LCD and Plasma TVs can be mounted in a variety of places depending on the size of the room and the room dynamics. We have divided our guide into the various rooms you may consider placing your TV. We also consider some questions you may have when mounting your plasma or lcd. Mounting a TV should be left to a professional installer or an electrician. What You Need To Know About LCD TV Wall Mounts

What You Need To Know About LCD TV Wall Mounts

Jim Johnson asked:

Once you view a HDTV program on a LCD TV screen, you will probably be hooked for life. The colors are so vivid and the resolution so sharp that it just makes TV viewing a pleasure.

But one of the big advantages of a LCD TV monitor is it’s ability to be mounted almost anywhere thanks to it’s thin configuration. Televisions have normally been viewed as a piece of furniture that takes up floor space in your home. That’s because the old CRT TV screens were very large and bulky, especially in the larger screen sizes, and just not conducive to being mounted very easily. But LCD TVs are changing all of that. They can actually be mounted on any flat surface that is capable of supporting their weight, even the ceiling. So what do you need to wall mount a LCD TV?

Thankfully, LCD wall mounts are becoming much more popular and available as the sales of LCDs continues to grow. They can be found both online and offline and come in a variety of sizes and price ranges. You can get a simple wall mount that mainly consists of some metal brackets that attach to the wall and then the TV is mounted on them, or you can get more sophisticated and buy a wall mount that has arms that allow you to slide the TV in and out from the wall and even adjust the viewing angle as desired.

The biggest caveat with LCD wall mounts is to be absolutely certain that the one you choose will indeed support the full weight of your particular TV monitor. To find out consult the TV specifications for your monitor in the user manual or online and determine it’s weight first. Then as you shop notice carefully how much weight each mount is capable of handling. If the supported weight statistics are not shown, don’t even bother with that mount.

Once you have the type of LCD wall mount that you want, the most important step is to actually install it. If you choose to do this yourself, be sure to follow the directions from the manufacturer very carefully in the installation process. It would also be a very good idea to be familiar with doing some kind of home improvement beforehand that involves wall mounts. After all, this mount will be holding a very expensive piece of equipment and if it fails, you will stand a good chance of destroying the TV altogether. If you don’t feel qualified to install the wall mount, hire out the job to someone who you know can handle that kind of job, and factor in the installation costs to make sure that it still fits into your budget.

Once installed correctly a LCD TV will be a joy to watch for many years and will also probably be a topic of conversation for whoever visits your home.
